Creativity and community take the lead in new short film featuring Darrell Mathes, Kas Lemmens and shared team roster

Montreal QC. (Oct. 18, 2021) – Vans Snow proudly presents a new short film in partnership with PUBLIC Snowboards, Out Of The Public Eye, featuring Darrell Mathes, and Kas Lemmens, along with appearances from several other team riders. Founded by professional snowboarder Joe Sexton, PUBLIC is all about building community and enabling free expression and individuality. Out Of The Public Eye is a visual manifestation of this shared ethos between PUBLIC and Vans.

Directed by Tanner Pendleton, the new film comes to life in his signature style—demonstrated in past films like Vans’ Landline., Evergreen and Together Forever—and is an honest reflection of the shared creativity and inclusivity amongst the core snowboard community.

“I’ve always been a fan of Josh Manoles and PUBLIC so it was really cool to step back and watch them take control of this thing,” said Tanner Pendleton. “Really proud of Darrell, Kas, and everyone who made this video possible during such a wild year.”

“What an honor to have a hand in this collaboration,” said Darrell Mathes. “From designing, to marketing and working with friends along the way, this will go down in the books for me!”

The film’s strong roster leans heavily on Mathes and Lemmens, two incredible talents hailing from diverse backgrounds. Known as one of the most influential pioneers of urban snowboarding, Mathes entered the consciousness of snowboarding’s movers and shakers during street snowboarding’s proliferation in the early 2000s. Today, the Portland, Oregon native claims more than a dozen video parts to his name, with his easy style and thoughtful trick selection. However, it’s his contributions to the culture that are fortifying his legacy as one of the few who have dedicated everything to the lifestyle they love.

Originating from Amsterdam, Lemmens is leading the charge for snowboarding’s new guard. A thoughtful approach and carefully curated video parts reflect this young rider’s tendency to think everything through down to the last detail. Cutting his teeth on the snow domes in Europe, Lemmens has leveraged year-round riding opportunities to hone his craft. Now, with breakthrough global video parts under his belt, the snowboarding community is taking notice. As humble and down to earth as they come, Lemmens has gained the respect of pro riders and kids alike and is poised to continue snowboarding’s progression.

In addition to Out Of The Public Eye, Vans and PUBLIC have also teamed up on a Vans x PUBLIC Hi-Standard OG snowboard boot in a neutral gray and vapor colorway with a bold, colorful translucent sole reminiscent of street art and inscribed with the film’s title as a tagline. The collection also includes a Skate Slip-On in the same colorway, a LS Off The Wall Tee and Polar Fleece, and a Vans x PUBLIC snowboard sock.

The entire offering is capped with the PUBLIC Vans collaboration snowboard, available in late October. The board is a modern take on a mid-wide park board, with a medium flex and profile that is camber under foot and flat out to the contact points, giving it the perfect balance of playfulness and stability when hitting jumps or rails.
